  Mr. McElmeel, Principal

I have been an educator for more than 20 years, serving students, families, and staff in a variety of roles. began my career teaching 5th grade in Ypsilanti Public Schools, where I spent seven and a half wonderful  years in the classroom. From there, I became the founding principal of Ypsilanti New Tech High School, a small, innovative high school built on project-based learning and integrated curriculum. I then served as  principal of Skyline High School in Ann Arbor for ten years, followed by a year in the Ann Arbor Public Schools central office supporting and coaching principals.

I am now in my second year as principal of Thurston Elementary, and it is an honor to serve this community. My focus as a school leader is on creating a warm and welcoming environment where every student, family, and staff member feels a sense of belonging. I am passionate about supporting our team to provide the very best outcomes for students, building strong relationships, and ensuring equity for all learners.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Teaching with a concentration in Science and a master’s degree in K-12 Administration/School Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. In 2010, I was recognized as one of EMU’s Scholars of Excellence in culmination of my graduate work.

I am proud of the amazing staff we have at Thurston and the way they go above and beyond to support our students. I look forward to continuing to partner with families and our community to make Thurston an even more supportive and welcoming place for all.
